Car Travel with Pets

Posted: Saturday, August 31, 2013

By Mary Fitzpatrick

You really need to wear heavy leather gloves (the kind that go up to your shoulder) if you are going to try to get my cat Eddie into the Mini-Van, but many pets love to drive, almost more than their owners. While I've only had to take Eddie for a ride a few times, he has taught us a great deal about what can happen to the inside of a car, with a pet.

Pets are a joy to have with us, but they do have special needs to help them stay comfortable and us happy.

Pet Hair

Hair is the hardest item to clean off upholstery and carpeting. Trying to vacuum it up is a waste of time for the most part. The fibers weave into the carpeting and fabrics of our car, and grip.

What gets hair off the carpet and fabrics fast and easy is rubber or latex gloves. There is a product out there called the Pet Sponge, which works great too, but it is really made from the same substance. Just put on a glove, get it a little damp and run your hand across the pet hair area. Your glove will fill with pet hair, effortlessly. Rinse off, and go in for another swipe.

You might consider getting a Pet Pad for your traveling pet.

Heat

If you are traveling with a pet, get a sun shield. Seriously. I know we sell them, and this looks like a great place to put an ad, but the facts are, cars heat up way too fast, and much hotter than we realize.

From a cool just-air-conditioned state, it takes a car less than 20 minutes to reach 120 degrees sitting in the sun, even with the window 'cracked' open for fresh air. In summer times, or hot days, the interior can reach 150 degrees in the same amount of time.

Well made, reflective sun shields can reduce your car's temperature by 50 degrees. Leaving the window 'cracked' is still a good idea, but keeping the interior heat level down is much better.

Urine

Don't ask.

Getting the Urine out of the interior carpeting is a bit of a chore. Start with baking soda. Just pour it on dry and let it sit over night. Vacuum and repeat, letting the baking soda sit again. Vacuum up the last layer and then pour into the affected area Hydrogen peroxide. Let this evaporate, and then vacuum.

This won't remove any stain or discoloration, but it will get the odor out and neutralize the urine itself. From this point you can use a carpet or upholstery cleaner to remove any stain that might remain.

Comfort

Keeping pets comfortable and safe inside the vehicle is sometimes a creative challenge. We do have several car accessories for pets which can help you with some of the details.

Cargo Area Travel Liner: This is full comfort. The padded liner is cushioned and slip resistant, and allows your pet full access to the cargo area of your min-van. The liner is water resistant and tear resistant. Your pet can walk around on the textured fabric without slipping and sliding. The rear of your vehicle can get warm, so the fabric is breathable to keep your pet comfortable in any season.

Seat Covers: Same idea as the cargo liner, just a smaller space. The fabric and comfort are the same, and so is the ease of cleaning and the protection provided to your interior.

Pet Barriers: These barriers limit your pets movement, and with many pets this is a good idea. It also adds to their safety.

With pet barriers, windows can also be let down a little more, providing cooler conditions when you have to leave your pet in the vehicle while traveling. (it is still a very good idea to also use the sun shield I talked about earlier).

Organizer: Pets need stuff! Feeding dishes, snacks, leashes, collars, scoopers, and so much more. Pets need a lot of stuff, and keeping it organized is a good thing when traveling with your four legged partner. Leashes get tangled and "lost" quickly. Having a place to store these required items, for easy access, allows you more fun and less hassle.

Preparing Your Car for Winter Storage

Posted: Wednesday, August 28, 2013

By Jason Helferich

With the show and racing season wrapped up and the temperature beginning to drop, it is time to start thinking about what you are going to do with your ride. Many of you will drive your car over the winter months; many others will store your car for the winter. Information on storing your car will not apply to all, especially those in the sunny southern states. However, if you plan to store your car during the winter months, this is a must read.

Cleaning

Getting your vehicle clean now will be much easier than after it has sat for a few months. Clean the car completely. A thorough clean will include the interior, exterior, undercarriage and under the hood. Any dirt that has accumulated on the vehicle will be much easier to remove now than after it has set for several months. Starting with the interior, be sure to vacuum, dust, and clean everything. The cleaner the car is, the better it will handle storage. Make sure you thoroughly wash the undercarriage. The dirt left on the undercarriage will rust or corrode metal parts while in storage. Cleaning the exhaust thoroughly, especially chrome or stainless exhaust tips will help to keep it from corroding. Once you are done with the undercarriage, it is time to move on to the exterior. Wash the vehicle. Washing can be a daunting task but in the end, it will be worth it. Once the car is clean, give it the best wax job it has ever seen. Wax everywhere there is paint - your car will love you for it. Polish any chrome on the car to keep it preserved over the winter months. Go over the vehicle and make sure it is completely dry before putting it away. Any moisture that remains will corrode metal parts while the vehicle is in storage.

Maintenance/Preparation

Preventative maintenance will help prepare your car for sitting over the winter. You should change the following fluids:
o Engine Oil
o Brake Fluid
o Coolant
o Washer Fluid
o Clutch Fluid

The next step in preparing your car for storage is to change the engine oil and filter. As soon as a vehicle is driven after an oil change, small amounts of condensation begin showing up inside the engine. If the vehicle is not being driven, this moisture increases the risk of rust on internal engine parts. By changing the oil prior to storage, you will minimize the moisture in the system. You should be sure to use synthetic oil, as it has enhanced coating properties and does not break down as easy as regular oil.

You should then top off your gas tank. Since most gas tanks are metal, by filling up the gas you will not allow moisture to form from the gas vapors which can cause corrosion. A fuel stabilizer should also be used, as gasoline can break down over an extended period of time.

Next, disconnect the battery. If the car will be stored for an extended period of time, remove it completely. Age and low temperatures in the winter can cause batteries to crack, thus subjecting your engine bay to battery acid. You should also use some type of battery maintainer or battery tender. These devices connect to your battery terminals and will provide the battery a continuous and consistent charge. Battery maintainers will shut down periodically to prevent overcharging. Vehicles have electrical accessories that can use battery power even when the car is not running and will run the battery dead. Battery maintainers can extend the life of the battery in your stored car.

You have a few options on how to protect the tires. You can jack up the car and place it on jack stands, coat the tires in lithium grease, or over inflate the tires. By placing the vehicle on jack stands it will prevent the tires from developing flat spots and it also reduces the strain on suspension bushings and other parts. Another option is to coat the tires in lithium grease. This is done to prevent the tires from drying out, cracking or developing leaks. You should not use petroleum based lubricants, such as Vaseline or Armor All, because they will eventually dry out and will actually dry and crack the tires. Lastly, by over inflating the tires you will prevent them from developing flat spots.

Use a silicone lubricant or lithium grease to coat the weather stripping and door seals. This will preserve these seals over the storage period. Also, make sure you lubricate the door hinges, door latches, door locks and the hood and trunk latches as well. If these latches lose their lubrication, they will become difficult to open.

Your next concern is critters, such as mice or other vermin that can get into your car and destroy it. You should plug your tail pipe with aluminum foil or steel wool to protect it from mice getting into it. You may also want to do the same on your intake, depending on its design.

You should roll up all the windows on the vehicle and also keep the doors, trunk, and hood closed to eliminate pressure on the hinges and keep out critters. Convertible owners should leave the top up, as it will keep the cover stretched. Another measure is to place packets of silica in the interior and trunk of the car to keep the areas free of moisture. Manual transmission cars should be left in gear, as this will eliminate the possibility of shift rod corrosion. Lastly, no matter what you do, DO NOT APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE! By leaving the brake engaged, the shoes can freeze to the drum, making it difficult to free them.

Storage facilities

Storing the car in a fully climate controlled building is the best choice. Unfortunately, this is not possible for most people. However, there are other options. Storing your car in a building without climate control can be equally efficient, but you must take the proper precautions. If the storage area you are using has concrete floors, placing carpet over the concrete will keep moisture away from the underside of the car. Concrete holds plenty of moisture and the carpet will help keep it away from the bottom of your car. It is suggested to at least cover the length of the car, but you can also carpet the entire concrete floor. Another option is to buy a plastic sheet or tarp and use it for the same purpose.

You can use an outside carport, but make sure you have protection from all sides against wind. Car covers can be used, but you must be very careful and consider the conditions the car will be subjected to outdoors. If it is in an area where it may experience a lot of wind, you have to make sure the cover is tight so that wind cannot flap the material as this can wear painted surfaces. If you know anyone who has owned an improperly tightened front-end bra, unfortunately they will be able to tell you all about this. The most important feature you should look for in a car cover is that it is made of a breathable material. If moisture is trapped between the cover and the car, the breathable fabric will allow it evaporate quickly. If you store your car outside, check to make sure that no moisture (from rain or melting snow) is allowed to accumulate under the vehicle or between the car and the cover. A car cover protects your car from light, dust, and the accidental bump. It will do this whether the car is stored indoors or outdoors.

It should be noted the information contained in this article applies to short-term storage. Short term storage is a period of several months, not to be confused with long term storage, which lasts for a period of several years. Vehicles stored long term need to have much more in-depth preparations than those described here.

Whether you follow these steps or not when storing your vehicle, it is important that you have a plan that will eliminate the four biggest problems of storage (light, moisture, temperature extremes, and vermin). By doing so, you will ensure that your car will not only look like it did prior to storage, but even possibly like the day you bought it... and hopefully for many years to come.

Every Driver's Must-Have Winter Driving Accessories

Posted: Thursday, August 22, 2013

By Jaime Sanders

I know summer is right around the corner and most people are putting their winter driving accessories away. But, if there's anything you need to stock up on or replace for the next snowy season, now's the time to do so. Stores are clearing room on their shelves for all the tailgate accessories and sun shades, so you can find your winter driving accessories for a fraction of their regular cost. Plus, there's nothing worse than waking up on a snowy day and knowing that your car isn't ready to take on the frost. Avoid last-minute snow-gear shopping by stocking up today. Here's a list of must-have winter driving accessories.

Snow Tires/ Snow Chains
If you live in an area that snows a lot, you'll definitely want to invest in a good set of snow tires. Snow tires have tread patterns that are designed to dig into the snow and ice, therefore keeping a better grip on snowy and icy surfaces. This grip is critical to make sure your car can stop and steer safely. If you only drive in the snow periodically, tire chains ought to do the trick. Snow chains give you the traction you need to avoid slipping and sliding all over the road.

Rubber Car Mats
Rubber car mats are an absolute must for anyone who has to drive in the snow. While floor mats don't do anything to improve your driving capabilities in the snow, they do a whole lot to protect your interior from anything your boots can drag in. With snow often comes slush and mud, and if you don't have rubber car mats in place, that slush and mud get tracked in all over your carpets. Rubber car mats also provide good all-year protection, guarding against spilled coffees, dirt and debris.

Windshield Washer Heater
Ditch your old snow scrapper and step up to a windshield water heater. Windshield washer heaters heat your washer fluid to 125-135 degrees before spraying. That way you can easily remove frost, ice, snow and other debris from your windshield without having to stand out in the cold with a crummy scrapper. And, since it's powered from your vehicle's electrical system, it uses minimal energy.

Windshield Covers
Keep your windshield from freezing over in the first place by using a windshield cover. Windshield covers are made to withstand sleet, snow, ice and wind, and they cut down on the defrost time. That means you can set your alarm for 10 minutes later in the morning since you won't have to worry about scraping or defrosting your windshield.

A Guide to Vacuum Cleaner Accessories

Posted: Friday, August 16, 2013

By M James

These days, a vacuum cleaner is used for much more than just cleaning carpets and floors, it can be used for a number of applications such as cleaning cars, furniture and shampooing carpets. For those with pets such as cats and dogs, accessories can often help to make life easier and allow the owner to clean up after their animals more easily.

There are a number of different vacuum cleaner accessories and attachments you can add to your vacuum cleaner, in order to improve its functionality and to provide even more cleaning ability. The following article highlights some of these in further detail.

Additional hoses

One of the most common, and popular vacuum cleaner accessories us an extended hose. This can help the user to seek out more dust by giving them the extra reach to delve into those awkward nooks and crannies, and for cleaning curtains and other hard to reach places An additional hose can also prove useful for those people who are looking to use their vacuum cleaner outside of the home, for example, in the car or caravan.

Vacuum cleaner brushes

Bushes are used to dislodge dirt, which is often trodden into carpets. After being dislodged, the vacuum can then easily suck up the excess dirt. These attachments are ideal for areas that see a lot of traffic, such as hallways, and also useful for those with pets, as they help to gather up excess hair.

Carpet shampooers

Some modern vacuum cleaners can be fitted with a shampooing attachment, which will help the user to clean the carpet, as well as vacuum it. This reduces the cost for cleaning carpets and means that your carpets can always look as good as new.

Parquet floor brushes

These special brushes will allow you to clean wooden, laminate or parquet flooring more effectively, and help to protect the floors from being damaged by grit and other dirt.

Car cleaning kits

Many vacuum cleaner manufacturers offer a car cleaning kit for their machines. These allow users to successfully clean their cars and typically include an extended vacuum hose, a smaller brush for getting into hard-to-reach places and a brush to help dislodge dirt. As well as having a clean and shiny exterior, your care interior can also be clean and look good.

Filters

For some people, particularly those with allergies and pets, the regular level of filtration offered by a standard vacuum simply isn't enough. For this reason, many people choose to add an extra filter, which blocks out dust and other potentially harmful allergens. It also might be worth looking at vacuum cleaners that have HEPA filters, which filter out over 99% of dust and other allergens.

Now you know more about how you can improve the performance and versatility of your vacuum cleaners, as well making your home and car cleaner, perhaps now is the right time to buy Vacuum Cleaner Accessories.

Effective Uses For Your Car Cup Holder

Posted: Tuesday, August 13, 2013

By Jeff R Nelson

Including a cup holder in the interior design of a car may have been the greatest idea since sliced bread. However, using it for a cup only is a close minded notion. With so many other things to throw in it, the more popular of which I'll include in this article, you have the ability to create a home away from home, or a mobile office.

Cups and beverages are the natural choice. We thank the auto industry for including a cup holder in the interior design of our automobiles. Cups of coffee, bottles of water, and even the now popular energy drinks can accompany us on our morning commute to the office, or when picking the kids up from school. Minus the occasional spill, most of us just take this simple application for granted.

As cell phones and PDA's become more commonplace, so does putting these devices into the drink holder. With its location being closely within reach, it makes grabbing that call all the more easier. (I want to make a note that many states are passing "hands free" laws regarding cell phone usage, and although I agree we should be driving first, texting once stopped, the cup holder is still a logical place for these types of devices.) With most cars coming standard with multiple drink holders, there are numerous places for numerous devices, in addition to cell phones and PDA's, there are pagers, remotes for push button start cars, and gaming devices.

The high school or college student in us still might use the cup holder for change. I know my own personal cup holder a few cars back was stuffed with pennies. When driving through the fast food window, or even waiting in line at one, it wasn't rare for me to sit and count out fifty cents or more in pennies to pay for my burger or soda. I'm sure you're smiling to yourself as you read this, because there never seems to be any coins in there over a nickel, besides that dirty dime, that's hiding with the pennies.

There?s one last topic, and probably the most creative. Various articles on the web describe a laptop tray that extends from the cup holder in your car. Constructed of PVC pipe, duct tape, and glue, this inventive use is described as making the morning commute more exciting. Cool idea or not, I don't promote using any device while the car is on, or more importantly while it is in motion. For more information (or to see a picture with a detailed description) search "cup holder laptop tray" on any search engine.

Basic Guide to Microscopy Accessories

Posted: Saturday, August 10, 2013

By Edison Ramsey

When you purchased your first microscope, you probably thought that it contained everything you will ever need to study living and non-living things in small detail. In some ways, you are right. However, you will still need microscopy accessories as you go along in your study.

Choosing the Right Accessories

Each type of microscope requires a specific set of accessories precisely because of their unique features. Of course, all microscopes have a common thread - seeing things on a microscopic level - but the technology used, the depth of field, and the most common applications often differ.

For example, a digital microscope has a similar depth of fields as that of the slide microscope except that it allows for the creation of virtual slides and the sharing of information. Or the difference between a slide microscope and a stereo microscope makes for relatively unique sets of microscopy accessories.

Thus, before purchasing accessories for your microscope, read the instruction manual, determine the specific part that you need and assess where you can buy them. Keep in mind that branded microscopes often don't have interchangeable interior parts since product integrity must be maintained. Unless, of course, you are buying highly interchangeable exterior microscopy accessories like slides and dust covers, then it's another story altogether.

It's always best to approach the authorized vendor of a specific part. This way, you are assured that it is of high-quality, hence, will contribute to longer microscope life. And always check that the part you have is exactly what you need!

Now, when it is time to install the microscopy accessories, you can either do it on your own or call the help of a professional. The latter is advisable for interior parts as these can be fragile and highly technical. For exterior parts like stage clips and slides, you might as well do it yourself.

Replace with New Microscope or Replace Old Parts

Microscopes can be expensive with prices running into the hundreds of dollars for top-of-the-line units. Thus, its parts and accessories can be on the high-end, too. Still, if you take good care of your microscope, it might be a long time yet before you have to search for microscopy accessories in terms of replacement parts.

But what happens when you have to replace old parts and the replacement costs is greater than the price for a brand new unit? Well, you either go for practicality or for sentimentality. Yes, some people can get attached to their microscopes, even baptizing them with names, so it will be quite understood if you opt for sentimentality.

If you opt for practicality, then good for you! This is because you might have to spend more money on future repairs for an oft-repaired microscope. Think of it as a rundown car that has become friends with the mechanic and enemies with your pockets.

In conclusion, there is no shame in being a dummy when it comes to microscopy accessories. After all, you cannot be expected to be a genius with microscopes on your first try!

Lexus GS 450h Hybrid Exterior and Interior Review

Posted: Wednesday, August 7, 2013

By Thomas Jones

Exterior

The staple of a Lexus vehicle is the strong emotional reaction people have to the car, be it passion or awe, and in the case of the GS 450h, we see that easily. This hybrid sedan has a style to it that accentuates the advanced and eco-friendly future that Lexus has seen, without sacrificing the quality language of the brand. In simply looking at the exterior, the GS 450h is a much more elongated and stretched vehicle in design with a long, sleek hood and a lower setting to the ground. The rear deck of the vehicle is shorter than other Lexus sedans and there is a more set-back greenhouse capacity.

The lines are clean and fluid, giving the vehicle a very sleek yet simple sensation. There is a sense of class quite clearly evident when looking at the aesthetic of the car's design, but Lexus doesn't ignore functionality. While maintaining the luxurious style Lexus is known for, the hybrid still manages to reflect its practicality and usability.

Like many other hybrid cars on the market, the GS 450h is built to be aerodynamic and utilizes engineering to create a body that can fend off wind resistance. The car's drag coefficient is substantially reduced, giving the vehicle a much smoother drive, without havin to deal wit the effect of air pressure. This isn't just an exterior feature either - the lessening of air resistance translates to a quiet ride.

In looking at the exterior, aside from body, there are several features to take note of, one being the unique high-density-discharge headlights. These lights can more than compensate for what are standard headlights. The wipers on the GS 450h actually sense the rain and activate, which is a must-see and the mirrors have heat elements to reduce fogging and are power-adjustable. The 18-inch wheels are stylish and functional, and the grill and front fascia are gorgeous. Also, LCDs in the vehicle work as rear brake lights while the turn signals are integrated into the mirrors.

Interior

Given that the GS 450h hybrid sedan is a luxury-class vehicle, you would expect nothing less than a plush, comfortable interior. That is exactly what you get with the GS 450h. The leather interior is soft, smooth and comforting, and the stainless steel scuff plates aren't overly prominent. These and a great collection of accessories that are advanced and stylish make this vehicle truly one of the top luxury cars on the market, hybrid or conventional.

To be expected, the driver's seat feels incredibly comfortable and is set higher to enable increased visibility and to relieve painful strain from lowered seats. The seat is a 10-way power adjustable bolstered driver's seat with heating capabilities. The steering wheel is telescopic and tilting, and the interior also has fine wood trimming with an exquisite dashboard. The dashboard also has wood trim and is home to the instrumentation panels with multiple controls and buttons that are centralized and sensitive for the driver's comfort and convenience.

One of the best features of the Lexus line is the center console located right above the audio system, which holds a 7-inch electronic screen. The screen allows the navigation system, backup camera and dual climate control are operated and viewed. Convenient, at your fingertips and safer, the only feature that could make this better is the voice recognition software that is available. With that, the only thing is do is sit back and drive as the features make for a hands-free ride.

As with any vehicle, the safety of yourself and your passengers is permanent and Lexus doesn't go lean on safety. With 10 different airbags in the vehicle, all placed in specific locations to maximize efficiency and provide a safe environment. With dual-front airbags on both front as well as rear seats, there are also several side airbags designed to prevent fatalities in any given situation.

If space is a concern for you, don't let it be. The seats are incredibly roomy, and the rear passenger seat can easily fit three passengers. While the center seat would be elevated from the center cushion hiding the battery pack, rest assured that there is still plenty of shoulder or leg room.

If there is anything to criticize about this luxury sedan, it would be the trunk space. Due to the battery pack's location at the rear of the vehicle, the trunk is only 7.5 feet, which is smaller than conventional sedans.
